Pap Smear Test – The Problems

The Pap Smear test is medical procedure performed on women of different age groups. The main objective of the test is to ensure that the woman’s body is healthy and that her reproductive organs are functioning properly. Cancers like the cervical cancer that affect the cervix of the woman, grow gradually but the symptoms or signs of occurrence can be predicted with the help of this test. Hence, the examination is primarily done to find out if there are any abnormalities, tumor growth, abnormal behavior of cells, etc.
The cervix cells are collected by the physician. They are then studied under the Public Health Articles New York Times microscope. If any abnormality is reported, prompt treatment can be started.
Basically abnormalities can be of the following types:
1. Atypical Glandular Cells
These are also known as AGC. These are cells that produce mucous near the lower end of the uterus and near the cervix. This condition indicates that some cells may not be normal. If AGC is noted, then you might have to go ahead with the colposcopy procedure as such women are more prone to cancer.
2. Atypical Squamous Cells
This is abbreviated as ASC. These are the cells on the outer layer of the cervix. Vaginal infection, allergy or an infection by the human papillomavirus can cause the atypical squamous cells to generate. The exact impact on the individual may not be clear at the time of testing and hence, the patient may be asked to proceed with a re-test of the Pap Smear or may be asked to do a HPV test which is specific to cervical cancer.
3. Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion
This is abbreviated as LSIL. Basically, the size and shape of cells is abnormal in this case. Genital warts Health Awareness Program are common reasons for this, besides the initial stage of development of cancers of the genital.
4. High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion
The abbreviation for this condition is HSIL. Medically the patient is at a greater risk of cancer because “High Grade” indicates very high degree of deformity in the cell. The cells are mainly pre-cancerous in most patients.
